The information regarding Attack Power provided on the Rogue FAQ is good, but a little convoluted in its explanation. Seped and Aylith has provided numerous explanations regarding the factor of weapon speed in the damage output equation, but I thought I'd give it a long shot and try to take into account as many variables as possible.

The major thing to remember is that Attack Power adds to your DPS. It's not a flat damage bonus. This is to balance things so that Attack Power does not drasticly favor faster weapons -- you get a DPS increase which means it's independent of speed.

However, such bonus has an interesting side effect to instant attacks. In an instant attack, the speed of the weapon plays no role. This means that two weapons with the same DPS, the slower weapon will produce harder hitting specials (check out the comparison between Julie’s Dagger and Thrash Blade below) and, a slower weapon with a lower DPS has a fairly high chance of being able to out-damage a faster weapon with higher DPS in the main hand of a rogue. This will also enlighten many on the idea of combat rogue – why rogues would choose to use big, heavy hitting main hand weapons instead of small nimble daggers and why for PvE purposes where Sinister Strike is THE attack of choice, a slow sword will outshine a fast dagger.

For the following comparison, assume you have enough +Attack Power to give you a 30dps bonus. Also VERY IMPORTANT to point out is that these calculations are AVERAGE damages. The damage variance on the weapons is +/- 30% of its average damage per hit (weapon speed x dps). You can work it out. On a weapon like Widowmaker that is 31.6dps 1.9 spd, the average damage is 60, +/- 30% will give you damage range of 43 to 78 damage, which is exactly what the weapon description says.

Now if you consider the fact that the rate at which a Rogue conducts sinister strike is directly determined by the rate at which a Rogue regenerates energy (which is approximately 2 seconds per tick, 20 energy every two seconds), and the fact that it costs 40 energy to conduct Sinister Strike (with improved SS rank 2 talent). This means you can use Sinister Strike with Julie's Dagger as many times as you can use it with Widowmaker. Noting the 185 damage vs. the 154 damage (barring crits), the Widowmaker clearly becomes a better choice in terms of pure Sinister Strike damage even though it has a lower DPS. The Thrash Blade, at this point, burns the competition.

To extend the analysis, let's say your typical Rogue fight vs. a mob lasts about 20 seconds (give or take) and the only skill you used was Sinister Strike (no Evsicerate). You would be able to do:

20 seconds x (1 tick / 2 seconds) x (20 energy / tick) = 200 energy worth

200 energy + initial 100 energy with which you started the fight = 300 energy

floor(300 energy x 1 Sinister Strike / 40 energy) = 7 Sinister Strikes

Let's put in Crits:

Assume a typical rogue with average equipment has 15% base crit chance (actual is slightly higher). A smart rogue would have 5 points in Lethality Talent, which means 30% damage bonus when you crit with SS, Ambush, Backstab, and Hemorrhage.

Assume also that on a regular crit, the damage dealt is doubled. i.e. 200% of original damage (100% more). Similarly, a Sinister Strike crit would deal 230% of original damage from talents (130% more). With me so far? Good, things are about to get unpretty:

To calculate average non-special attack damage obtained from 15% crit chance in 20 seconds, we have

20 seconds / weapon speed * 15% crit chance * dps * weapon speed = crit damage added

(swings taken, multiply by crit% to get # of swings that crits, then multiply by the weapon damage per hit for those hits)

The above simplifies to:

20 seconds x 15% crit chance x Weapon DPS = crit damage added for non-specials

and similarly we get:

7 x 15% crit x SS Damage x 130% damage bonus = crit damage added for sinister strikes

7 x 154 + 210 = 1288 damage from SS with crits accounted

Julie’s Dagger total: 2817 damage

20 x 0.15 x 66.5 dps = 199.5 重击伤害增加

7 x 185 + 252 = 1547 damage from SS with crits accounted

Widowmaker Total: 2964.3 damage

(I’m gonna simplify things here)

20 x 65.2 dps x 115% = 1499.6 damage from regular attacks with crits (you notice it’s less than that of Julie’s Dagger, b/c Julie’s Dagger has higher DPS)

7 x 15% x 244 x 130% = 333.06 crit damage added from SS

7 x 244 + 333.06 = 2041 damage from SS with crits accounted

Thrash Blade Total: 3540 damage

20 x 65.2 dps x 115% = 1499.6 包含重击的普通攻击伤害(你会注意到这比Julie’s Dagger低,当然是因为Julie’s Dagger有更高的DPS)

Still with me? Good, because I almost lost myself.

Let’s Account in Poison damage to even the battlefield: (And remember, Poison application is % chance, so faster your weapon, more likely you’ll get a poison proc in a fixed period)

20% application chance, 130 nature damage on average. A rogue would probably have 5 points in Improved Instant Poison, which means 10% more chance of applying Instant Poison, making it 30%

Hmm… Julie’s Dagger is looking up from here, but it’s still no contest when taken up against the Thrash Blade. From a PVP standpoint, you would rarely consider adding instant poison on your main blade – crippling gives you huge mobility advantages that you simply cannot ignore, which means if you only used SS in PvP, Widowmaker STILL wins out. If you’re a combat rogue or Sinister Strike is your primary attack (in the case of PvE Soloing), pick something SLOW for your main hand if you can!

怎么样...Julie’s Dagger有不少进步了,但还是比不上Thrash Blade。从PVP的角度来看,你很少会考虑在主手武器上涂急性毒 -- 残废毒给与你无法拒绝的巨大优势,也就是说如果你在PVP中只用险恶攻击,那Widowmaker还是赢家。如果你是一个战斗盗贼或者险恶攻击是你的主要攻击方式(在PVE练级中),那么尽量选一把慢速的主手武器吧!

Now let’s consider PvP or Group situations where you can Backstab a lot. What if we use Backstab instead of SS? This puts Thrash Blade out of the equation. First things we notice is that, by changing from SS to BS, crits play a more important role while the non-special DPS remains the same. So we only have to do calculation Comparisons between SS and BS.

Final Rank Backstab: 150% weapon damage + 175, 60 energy use

With Improved Backstab rank 3, you get 30% bonus to crit while BSing, making your BS crit rate somewhere around 45%.

With Rank 5 Opportunity, you get 20% damage bonus to BS, Garrote and Ambush

So your BS damage will be 180% Weapon Damage + 210 flat (that's what it says on my tooltip).

300 energy for 20 seconds of combat = 5 backstabs.

5 x 45% BS crit x 365.61 x 130% damage bonus for crits = 1069.41 damage from crits

Total from BS: 2897.4 dmg

Poison from BS:

5 x 30% x 130 = 195

Total damage from poison and regular attacks: 2897 dmg + 66.5 x 20 x 115% + 600 + 195 poison = 5222 damage

背刺 无重击 = 66.5 x 1.3 x 1.8 + 210 = 365.61
5 x 365.61 = 1828 无重击背刺伤害
5 x 45% BS 重击 x 365.61 x 130% 重击伤害提升 = 1069.41 背刺重击增加伤害

Widowmaker BS

61.6 x 1.9 x 1.8 + 210 = 420.67 damage per BS non crit

5 x 420.67 = 2103.36 damage if no crits

5 x 45% x 420.67 damge per bs non crit x 130% damage bonus for crits = 1230.46 damage from crits

Total from BS: 3333.5 dmg

Poison from BS = 195

Total damage from poison and regular attacks: 3333.5 + 61.6 x 20 x 1.15 + 410 + 195 = 5355 damage

61.6 x 1.9 x 1.8 + 210 = 420.67 无重击背刺单次伤害

Pretty comparable, ain’t it? You’ll notice poison makes up for quite a bit of the room between the two daggers. Without Instant Poison, the Widowmaker, a lvl 42 dagger, will CLEARLY win out vs. Julie’s Dagger, a lvl 50 dagger. You’ll also notice that, carefully employing backstabs, the total damage being put forth by these daggers completely blows Sinister Strike damage away (if you spec correctly, also remember that I "threw away" the damage of half a sinister strike early on in this discussion because i took the floor of the # of SS you can do in 20 seconds). The only downside is position, but the extra chance to crit gives you a much greater ability to take advantage of Seal Fate. In a PvP situation, it’s a matter of how quickly you can disable your enemy before retaliation comes in full force. In cases like these, the initial damage you do in the first 3-4 seconds can make a life / death difference. It doesn’t matter if in 5 minutes your damage will outshine mine if for the first 30 seconds I can blow you away. That’s where heavy-hitting weapons really shine.

一目了然,不是吗?你会注意到毒对两把匕首都造成很大的影响。如果没有强化急性毒,Widowmaker,一把42级匕首轻松胜出Julie’s Dagger,一把50级匕首。你同样能注意到,在熟练使用背刺时,那几把匕首所输出的伤害把险恶攻击的伤害远远抛在了身后(前提是你选择了合适的天赋,不过还要记住我在以上计算中因为取整忽略了半个险恶攻击)。使用匕首的唯一缺点就是位置,但额外的重击几率能在天赋:决定命运上轻而易举的为你带来巨大的优势。在PVP情况下,最重要的就是要尽快地砍翻对手不让其有等待援助并报仇的机会,因此你最初3-4秒造成的伤害决定了你的生死存亡。如果我能在30秒内把你打趴下的话我根本不在乎你能在5分钟内比我造成更多的伤害。那才是那些笨重武器有用武之地之时。

Summary:
In 20 seconds of SS + regular damage, Widowmaker does 5.2% more damage than Julie's. When Poison is put into the equation, Widowmaker does 8% less damage than Julie's. In 20 seconds of BS + regular damage, Widowmaker does 7.3% more damage than Julie's. When poison is considered, Widowmaker does 2.5% more damage than Julie's.

Remember, I didn’t into account is the fact that eviscerate, our best finisher, is completely independent of what weapon you use. And, finally, I discounted the effects of using different openers (Cheap Shot vs. Ambush, slower weapon obviously produced higher Ambush damages, etc.) But, if you’re still following through all of this, you will fully understand that the more attack power you have, the more weight your instant attacks will have on your damage output which means that the more important your weapon speed will come into play.

总结:
对于二十秒的险恶攻击+普通攻击,Widowmaker比Julie's多造成5.2%的伤害。在计算中考虑毒的话,Widowmaker比Julie's少造成8%的伤害。在二十秒的背刺+普通攻击中,Widowmaker比Julie's多造成7.3%的伤害。加入毒后,Widowmaker比Julie's多造成2.5%的伤害。

I've checked my math a few times through, and I've found minor mistakes here and there each time. I hope it's as free of mistakes as possible, but this is the product of one overworked caffeine-laiden brain. Feel free to tear this apart, provide addendums, or corrections.

I thought the off-hand is pretty obvious, but Here's a quickie on the off hand:

Thrash Blade 35.2 dps, 2.7 speed

Julie's Dagger 36.5 dps, 1.3 speed

Placing all the assumptions we've made earlier regarding DPS, average weapon damage etc.

In 20 seconds,

Thrash Blade does:

(35.2 + 30 dps) x 20 seconds x 1.15 (15% chance to crit) = 1500 damage

Poison from Thrash = 20 seconds / 2.7 spd x 30% application chance x 130 nature damage = 289 damage from poison

Julie's Dagger does:

(36.5 + 30 dps) x 20 seconds x 1.15 = 1529 damage

Poison from Julie's = 20 seconds / 1.3 spd x 30% application chance x 130 nature damage = 600 damage from poison

It's pretty easy to see that under the same DPS, weapon speed plays a major role in how much damage you get from poison since the DPS from normal attacks remain the same.

Notice how I completely ignored the damage and hit-rate penalty from using these weapons in off-hand. While the to-hit penalty will affect both the regular attacks and poison applied (by the same percentage regardless of speed), the damage penalty will only affect the attack damage and not poison. This means that poison damage plays an even bigger role than initially calculated.

On the off hand, a faster weapon > slower weapon with the same DPS if you plan to use any type of poison.

Now whether to use a faster weapon with lower DPS or a slower weapon with higher DPS on the offhand is just a matter of working out these numbers and finding a balance.
